Leadership Confidence for Women of Color: 3 Ways to Stop Shrinking and Claim Your Presence

She walked into the boardroom with all that she possessed. Decades of experience, a master's degree, and a professional track record most would envy.
And still — when it was time to speak — she hesitated.
Not because she didn't have fresh ideas. But because she was the only woman of color in the room.
Again.
And somewhere along the line, she learned to make herself smaller so others could feel bigger.
Sound familiar?
If you've ever experienced this as a woman of color, you might have believed it was imposter syndrome — that nagging internal voice that says, "I don't belong here."
But for high-achieving women of color, it's often something deeper.
"I belong here — but not as ALL of me."
The difference matters.
You're not doubting your qualifications. You've proven those — repeatedly. You're navigating spaces that weren't designed with you in mind. And the exhaustion is causing you to shrink.
Your voice. Your opinions. Your ethnicity. Your authentic self — carefully edited for the comfort of others.
And you wonder, "Why do I feel this way?"
It's Not Your Fault
Here's what nobody tells you: the shrinking isn't a personal flaw. It's systemic.
Society has long trained women to:
Prove competence repeatedly before claiming authority
Stay humble and modest rather than own their expertise
Seek external validation before acting
And for women of color specifically, the weight is even heavier:
Hypervigilance in spaces where you're "the only one"
Constant scrutiny of your competence and authority
Walking into rooms where most of the time, you're the only woman of color present
You didn't create these conditions. But you've been navigating them — probably for your entire career. So, shrinking became a survival strategy that kept you safe in spaces that weren't always safe for you.
But survival strategies expire when you move forward with greater confidence.
The Confidence Gap Is Not What You Think
As a career coach for women over 40, I have worked with several high-achieving women of color who are ready to step more fully into their leadership presence.
In our early conversations, I ask them a series of questions:
What does your most authentic self look like?
What parts of yourself do you hold back in professional settings? In what ways?
What do you believe would happen if you brought "her" fully into your leadership?
They pause on every single one. Not because they don't know the answers. Because nobody had ever asked them before.
And almost without exception, these accomplished women — brilliant, credentialed, respected — tell me they hold back. Hide parts of themselves. Make themselves smaller in the very rooms they've earned.
I listen intently. But I'm never surprised.
I've heard it before. I've FELT it before.
That's how we begin closing the confidence gap. Here's practical tips to help you too.
3 Ways to Stop Shrinking and Start Leading with Authentic Confidence
1. Know Yourself
When do you go small? With whom? In what rooms?
Before you can change the pattern, you must admit what is true. Keep a simple log for one week. Notice the moments you edit yourself. The meetings where you hold back. The rooms where you disappear.
Then — before you walk into any high-stakes room — don't review your resume. Instead, remind yourself:
I earned this seat. I belong here. My perspective matters.
Building career clarity starts here — with knowing yourself so completely that you become unshrinkable.
2. Claim Your Moment
Every room has a moment. A pause. An opening.
Take it before the voice in your head talks you out of it. Before you edit yourself into silence.
Your first words in any room set the tone — for others AND for yourself.
3. Bring ALL of Yourself
Your background isn't baggage. It's a lens. A perspective. A competitive advantage that no one else in that room has.
The woman who grew up navigating multiple worlds possesses skills most leaders spend years trying to develop — adaptability, empathy, resilience, nuance, and courage.
That's not a liability. That's your superpower.
Your Seat Is Already Yours
The boardroom needs YOU. Your voice. Your background. Your perspective. Your whole authentic self — not the carefully edited version you've been offering.
No one can walk this path for you. But you don't have to navigate the journey alone.
Empowering women to achieve authentic success is at the heart of everything I do as a career coach for women over 40 — helping you align who you are, with the work you do, and how you show up.
