You Are Not Your Job Title: Career Advice for Professional Women Over 40

White arrow painted on a road, pointing straight ahead.

Imagine driving somewhere on a perfectly normal day. Traffic is moving. You know the route. And then — without warning — your car stalls. Or dies completely.

You pull over, sit for a moment, in disbelief.

Now what?  That car took you places. It was reliable. It was yours.

You know you must continue your journey.  But that’s easier said than done — especially when the vehicle you lost felt like more than transportation. It felt like you.

Unexpected career transitions work the same way. If you're seeking career advice for professional women over 40, this distinction can help you understand the difference between feeling lost, remaining stuck, and moving forward with clarity.

You Are Not the Vehicle

Your job, your title, your employer — these are vehicles. They carry your strengths for a season. They give your expertise a context, your relationships a home, your contributions a stage.

But they were never the source of what you bring. That belongs to you.

This distinction matters because when a professional vehicle stalls, many accomplished women make this mistake: they confuse losing the vehicle with losing themselves.

Three of my clients know this feeling well:

  • Dr. Teresa D. lost a position after 15 years at a prestigious organization. Highly accomplished — a PhD, deep expertise, and the respect of her colleagues — her vehicle, the job, disappeared without warning.

  • Tamika A.* was passed over for a promotion and handed an unfamiliar role instead. Her vehicle — the title she had worked toward — was taken before she could claim it.

  • Fatima S.* held a senior role that ended abruptly following a change in political administration. Her vehicle — the institution — disappeared overnight through no fault of her own.

Jobs, titles, organizations. Three different vehicles. Three different losses. One shared truth: the driver was still there. And so was her DRIVE.

The DRIVE Framework: What Travels With You

When a professional vehicle breaks down, what remains? More than you think.

Every accomplished woman possesses what I call DRIVE — the assets that belong to you, not to any job, title, or organization:

D — Determination.

The resolve to keep going even when road conditions change. It's what got you this far and it doesn't disappear with a title.

R — Relationships.

The people who know your work, your character, and your reputation. The network that stands with you and has your back — before the job and long after it.

I — Instincts.

The judgment, discernment, and wisdom you've built over decades. You know how to read situations, solve problems, and focus on what matters. No layoff takes that.

V — Values.

What you stand for. What you won't compromise. The foundation beneath every role you've ever held at any organization.

E — Expertise.

The knowledge, skills, and mastery that live in you — not in a job description.

In short, you may have lost the vehicle. But your DRIVE will help propel you forward.

Clarifying Your Destination

Reclaiming your DRIVE is just the beginning. Moving forward means deciding where you're headed next.

Your destination doesn't need to be rebuilt from scratch. You get to choose. And that choice becomes clearer when you do the work of career clarity.

Dr. Teresa D., Tamika A., and Fatima S. did that work. Each entered coaching feeling lost, confused, or afraid of moving forward.  Here's where they are now — and what they said:

  • Dr. Teresa D. is working with local nonprofits and plans to launch her own consulting firm. "Now, I feel like the strengths I bring are my identity rather than the position I'm in. To women considering this program I would say... you have what you need to move forward, and this process will help you rediscover it or find it for the first time."

  • Tamika A. chose to stay in her new role, sharpened her leadership skills, and is building toward the next chapter on her own terms. "When you are prepared for the next chapter, you have a calm spirit. I have a strategy now! This program has been part of my self-care. All women should go through a program like this."

  • Fatima S. formed a team and is building a national organization centered on her own expertise. "I feel more confidence in the foundation I am building my career off of — and in how my experiences are important and valuable. I don't need to hold back because I am afraid of the outcome."

Different vehicles. Same DRIVE. All moving forward.
